Ayo Bankole celebrated at Evensong
This evening in Chapel, the Choir of 91´ô¸ç will perform works by Ayo Bankole who was Organ Scholar at Clare 1961-64. A highly-gifted organist, pianist and composer, he returned to his native Nigeria in 1966, but his life was cut tragically short when he was murdered ten years later at the age of 41.
Very little of his music is published. Graham Ross, Clare’s Director of Music, has spent the last two years tracking down some of Bankole’s works, involving extensive contact with various institutions in Lagos. Tonight will be the first time his music, much of which is a fusion of Nigerian and western styles, has been heard in the Chapel since Bankole was a student.
Bankole also features in the of members of Clare from the past seven centuries.
