Honorary Fellow Skip Gates awarded honorary degree from the University of Oxford
Professor Henry Louis "Skip" Gates Jr. (1973, Honorary Fellow) has been awarded an honorary degree from the University of Oxford.
From a young age, he had wanted to study at Cambridge or Oxford, and came to Clare from Yale as a Mellon Fellow. Commenting on the award, Professor Gates said, "To my amazement, I was selected, which took me to Cambridge, and to an entirely new life than the one I had been expecting and preparing to lead. So, 53 years later, I finally got that Oxford degree! I am so honoured by this. And it was well worth the wait.â€
Professor Gates is the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and Director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University as well as an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker and literary scholar.
